In 2016, Tongda supplied a custom furniture package for the Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel Scranton in Pennsylvania, USA.
The project was part of a wider guest room renovation programme at a hotel with an unusual history. The property occupies the former Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad Station, a historic building completed in 1908 and later converted into a hotel.
Our scope covered 530 pieces of furniture and related upholstered items, including desk chairs, lounge chairs, ottomans, sofa beds, benches and dining chairs.
For us, the project was not simply about producing furniture in quantity. The key was to manufacture a consistent batch of hospitality furniture to the approved specifications and materials, while fitting into a renovation project where the furniture had to work within an existing hotel environment.

The sofa beds included the LP mattress and bed frame specified for the project.
This was a production order built around approved product specifications rather than a catalogue order. The quotation specified individual dimensions, materials, finishes and upholstery requirements for each product.
The Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel occupies the former Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad passenger station.
The station was completed in 1908 and designed in the Beaux-Arts tradition. Its original architecture includes Indiana limestone, marble finishes and a distinctive Tiffany-glass barrel-vaulted ceiling.
The building was later converted into a hotel, creating a very different situation from a conventional newly constructed property.
In 2015, the hotel announced a major renovation programme covering guest rooms and the ballroom. The work included replacing furniture, wall coverings and carpeting, reconfiguring room layouts, and introducing new artwork and lighting. The design approach also aimed to carry the character of the historic station into the guest rooms.
That context matters when looking at the furniture package.
A renovation in a historic property is not simply a matter of replacing old furniture with new furniture. The new pieces have to support the updated guest experience while working within the existing architecture and room layouts.
The Tongda quotation covered a focused group of loose and upholstered furniture products.
The largest quantities were the 150 desk chairs, 128 lounge chairs and 128 ottomans.
We also produced:
24 sofa beds, including mattress and bed frame
61 benches
24 dining chairs
15 additional pillows
The specifications included individual product dimensions in both imperial and metric measurements, which was important for a US hotel project.
The order was therefore not based simply on product names. Each item had to be manufactured to an agreed physical specification.
That distinction is important when evaluating a hotel furniture supplier.
A supplier may be able to produce a chair. The more relevant question for a project is whether the supplier can repeatedly produce that chair to the same dimensions, finish and upholstery standard across a large batch.
The project specifications called for a combination of solid wood, engineered wood, fire-resistant foam and client-supplied upholstery fabric.

The furniture frames were specified with solid wood, together with E1 MDF and plywood components where required.
The project also specified a black-painted finish and upholstered construction.
For a hospitality project, material selection is not only about appearance. Furniture has to withstand repeated guest use, cleaning and handling, and it must remain consistent throughout the production batch.
Using client-supplied fabric also meant that the furniture had to be produced around an approved upholstery material rather than a standard fabric chosen from a supplier's own catalogue.
One important part of the project was the relationship between the individual samples and the final production batch.
The furniture was first developed and checked as individual pieces before moving into larger-scale production.
The sample stage allowed the project team to confirm:

Once the specification was established, the same construction had to be reproduced across hundreds of pieces.
This is where hotel furniture manufacturing becomes different from ordinary furniture production.
A single attractive sample proves very little.
For a hotel project, the real test is whether the 20th, 50th or 120th unit looks and functions like the approved first piece.
Our production photographs from the project show large quantities of finished upholstered furniture assembled in the factory's product inspection area.

For the Radisson project, this stage was especially important because the order contained large numbers of repeated furniture types.
For example, the project required 128 lounge chairs and 128 ottomans.
That creates a different quality-control challenge from producing one-off furniture.
The production team has to control the same details repeatedly:
Overall dimensions
Frame construction
Upholstery tension
Seam alignment
Cushion proportions
Leg position
Surface finish
Overall appearance
Small inconsistencies become much more visible when dozens or hundreds of identical pieces are placed together in a hotel.
Our approach is straightforward: the approved sample becomes the reference point for mass production.
The final hotel room photographs show how the furniture was used within the guestroom environment.
One view shows the bedroom with two beds and a working desk with a computer.
Another shows the living area with seating, tables and dining chairs.
A third view looks from the bedroom towards the living area and shows the relationship between the different furniture functions within the room.
That relationship is important.
Hotel furniture is not evaluated as isolated products once it reaches the property. A desk chair has to work at the desk. A lounge chair has to work with the available circulation space. An ottoman needs to work with the chair. A bench has to fit the bed and surrounding clearances.
In a renovation project, these relationships become even more important because the furniture is being introduced into an existing building rather than an empty new-build shell.
At first glance, many of the products in this order look straightforward: chairs, ottomans, benches and tables.
But hotel projects place requirements on furniture that are easy to underestimate.
The supplier has to manage:
Repeatability
The same product must remain consistent throughout the production batch.
Dimensional accuracy
The furniture needs to fit the approved room configuration and clearances.
Material control
The specified combination of solid wood, plywood, MDF, foam and fabric must remain consistent.
Upholstery control
Fabric tension, seams, corners and overall appearance have to remain consistent from piece to piece.
Production coordination
Different product categories must move through production without creating quality differences between batches.
This is why the role of a hotel furniture manufacturer is broader than simply manufacturing a product from a drawing.
When a hotel operator, designer or procurement team is looking for a Radisson furniture supplier, the important question should not simply be whether the supplier has worked with a recognisable hotel brand.
The more useful questions are practical:
Can the supplier manufacture to a fixed specification?
Can it produce hundreds of repeated pieces consistently?
Can it work with client-supplied materials?
Can it control upholstery and finishing across a production batch?
Can it provide samples before mass production?
Can the factory inspect finished products before shipment?
These are the capabilities that matter when a hotel furniture order moves from an approved design into actual production.
The Radisson Lackawanna Station project is a good example of this process.
Another practical feature of the project was the use of US-style dimensions in inches alongside metric production measurements.
The quotation specified products such as:

For export hotel furniture, this level of dimensional control matters.
The supplier needs to understand the specification as a production requirement, not simply convert numbers from one unit to another.
The final furniture must be manufactured to the approved physical dimensions and remain consistent through the entire production run.
Looking back at this project, the most useful lesson is not simply that Tongda supplied furniture to a Radisson hotel.
The more important point is how a historical hotel renovation was translated into a manufacturing order.
The sequence was:
Project requirements → Product specifications → Samples → Material confirmation → Mass production → Product inspection → Delivery
That process is common to many international hotel furniture projects, even when the furniture styles and hotel brands are different.
The difference between a successful project and a difficult one is often found in the production details.
Tongda has worked on international hotel projects where furniture has to be manufactured according to approved designs, dimensions, materials and finishes rather than selected from a standard catalogue.
The Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel project is one example from our earlier US project experience.

The supplier does not simply need to make the first piece correctly.

The Radisson Lackawanna Station Hotel Scranton project was completed during a period when the historic property was updating its guest rooms and interiors.
Tongda's role was to manufacture a defined package of custom furniture for the project, covering 530 pieces across seven product categories.
The project demonstrates an important principle in hotel furniture procurement:
The value of a furniture supplier is not measured by the appearance of one sample. It is measured by how reliably that sample can be reproduced at production scale.
For historic hotel renovations, that consistency becomes even more important because new furniture has to work within an existing building, an established interior concept and a carefully controlled guestroom layout.
That is where experienced hotel furniture manufacturing matters.
